A Joyful Wedding Ceremony at the Chapel at Beaver Creek: Flute, Viola, Cello Trio

On a vibrant day in late May, I had my first mountain wedding for 2023. My drive up to the mountains was a mix of sunshine, rain, and even some snow over the continental divide. The ceremony took place in Beaver Creek, Colorado, and the town was brimming with energy because it was hosting a lively Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival for Memorial Day Weekend.

Just on the outskirts of the festival's buzz, the Chapel at Beaver Creek offered a secluded haven. The quaint chapel, cozily situated amidst a forest of spring trees was a nostalgic and peaceful setting. A cool mountain breeze and sounds of the rushing river water whispered throughout the chapel through the open windows.

The preparation leading to the ceremony was spent in collaboration with the mother of the bride. She requested traditional classical music for the prelude, and she specifically wanted to hear the Hornpipe Finale from Handel’s Water Music. I chose a mix of upbeat and slow classical pieces, befitting the solemn, yet joyous, ceremony.

As the ceremony concluded, we played the lively Rigaudon from Handel’s Water Music to send the couple joyously on their way.

An Irish Wedding Celebration in Estes Park, Colorado: Flute, Viola, Cello Trio

Flute and String Trio Wedding Ceremony Music at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Estes Park, Colorado, Flute and Strings by Christen Stephens, Photo by Christen Stephens

I love playing Irish music on my flute, and it’s one of my specialties, so I was so excited when this couple asked me to help celebrate their Irish heritage at their wedding with our music! The family had immigrated from Ireland through Ellis Island, which reminded me of my own grandmother who also immigrated through Ellis Island. What a wonderful and fun family history!

The couple chose our flute and strings trio (flute, viola, cello), to play music for their wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. They loved the full sound of our trio, but that it has a lighter sound than a quartet.

The ceremony took place at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Estes Park, Colorado. It was a charming hilltop church in a majestic mountain setting. Originally, the couple wanted a prelude of Irish music and other non-traditional music to greet their guests as they arrived. Unfortunately, it turned out that this Catholic Church required us to play approved traditional music. I picked out a new set list and had it approved, and I sadly couldn’t incorporate any of the music that the bride originally wanted. But we were able to fit in all of the bride’s song requests later for cocktails!

We played a beautiful and holy prelude, befitting of the setting, and our music filled the church with glorious sounds from our overhead perch in the choir loft. For her communion, the bride chose for us to play “Blest Are They”, and I arranged a lush setting of the song for our trio to perform.

Afterwards, we moved to Della Terra Mountain Chateau to play cocktail hour music. This is where we let loose and had some fun! We played 100% traditional Irish music and Riverdance music. From jigs and reels to slow and haunting airs, we created a lovely vibrant atmosphere with our music as guests mingled for cocktails. To accomplish this, we added 11 new traditional Irish pieces to our repertoire, and I specially arranged 5 new Riverdance songs for our trio. Leading up the wedding, it was not uncommon for my husband to hear me playing “Reel Around the Sun” and other lively Irish tunes over and over again so that I could perfect this difficult music. It was thrilling when it all came together into one celebration!

A Star Wars Inspired Wedding Ceremony and Reception at The Denver Botanic Gardens: Flute, Viola, Cello Trio

The Denver Botanic Gardens are my favorite wedding location because I love gardening and the natural beauty of plants and flowers! This weekend, our flute and strings trio (flute, viola, cello), had the privilege of playing at the Tropical Conservatory for this couple’s wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, and full dinner reception.

It was a blazing hot day, and it was even hotter inside the conservatory - probably well over 100 degrees. Thankfully, after the wedding, a few clouds moved and it cooled off a little. As the guests arrived, we welcomed them with Disney music and pop tunes. Then, for the cocktail hour, we switched to elegant classical music. Then, while the guests ate dinner, we played a mix of classical and contemporary music.

The couple particularly loved Star Wars music, and I made several new Star Wars arrangements for them. They also loved Disney, jazz, and well, pretty much everything! They were fun to work with and I loved their music selections. For their first dance, we played “Across the Stars” from Clone Wars, and then for the dance with the parents, we played “A Whole New World” from Aladdin. When we saw the guests lining up with light sabers for the send-off, we knew that we had to play another Star Wars song, so we played “Darth Vaders Theme (The Imperial March)”.

From the Mother of the Bride:

The perfect garden wedding music!
Thanks so much to Christen and her trio for their wonderful performance at my daughter's wedding at the Denver Botanic Gardens in August. We couldn't be happier. They learned the music we requested (so much Star Wars!) as well as pop and big band hits. We received so many compliments from guests and the other vendors. It was the perfect musical accompaniment to the garden wedding and reception. We couldn't have asked for more.”

It was a blustery day in late summer when I played with my flute and strings trio for this very elegant wedding ceremony. We played romantic contemporary music for this modern couple as guests arrived and enjoyed drinks.

It was such a windy day that the bride’s veil blew off her head just as she started walking down the aisle! It became tangled in a twiggy tree and it took the wedding planner and another good Samaritan a good five minutes to extricate the delicate tulle. The bride ended up being married without he veil on, but that was a small detail to her. It was obvious to see that this couple was so in love and happy to be married that nothing else really mattered. The ceremony was absolutely lovely.

After the ceremony, we played upbeat contemporary music as the guests enjoyed cocktails and appetizers on the patio. I added our drum machine to these lively tunes to add the rhythm and energy that we love in pop and rock songs.

“Look no further if you wish to hire the very best!”

“Christen Stephens is a true professional, and a joy to work with! She recently played her beautiful music for our daughter’s August wedding in Beaver Creek, and no one in attendance that day will soon forget the beautiful music she and her team provided! If you need help selecting music, Christen will guide you to the perfect songs, and has a wide variety of music to choose from! Look no further if you wish to hire the very best! Christen and her team of talented musicians will not disappoint!” - Sharon B.

This couple had gorgeous weather for their outdoor wedding ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch. To make the planning easier for this very busy couple, I had the privilege of working with the bride’s mom on most of the details. She was an absolute pleasure to get to know and coordinate with. It was a little bit of a guessing game, but we settled on a contemporary music set list that we thought the couple would love, and they did!

Our flute and strings trio (flute, viola, cello) played both before and after the ceremony, and I accompanied our music with lively beats on our drum machine. With 200 guests in the outdoor setting, I boosted our sound with my professional amplification system, and everyone was able to hear us beautifully. The ceremony was stunning, and I loved the two adorable Golden Doodles who were part of the processional!

This July, our flute and string trio played for an emotional and joyful wedding ceremony at the Chapel at Beaver Creek.

Our trio played prelude music as guests arrived, and our music set list was one I worked with the bride to create. She wanted modern and recognizable tunes with some more traditional classical selections in the mix.

The ceremony was incredibly joyful and heartfelt, and the music selections really reflected the personality of the couple. After we played the recessional song, and at the couple’s request, we launched into a rousing rendition of the Star Wars main theme, much to the delight of a few of the guests!

From the Groom:

“Best Live Wedding Music of All Time”

“We were so incredibly fortunate to have Christen and her flute and strings trio to play for our wedding recently at the Beaver Creek Chapel.

In the weeks leading up to our big day, Christen was incredibly supportive of my wife and I's decisions in terms of tailoring our dream playlist. They could not have set a better mood in the chapel that day, and there were tears of joy a'plenty.

Thank you so much to Christen Wedding Music and co. for their amazing work! Would definitely recommend to a friend, family, or stranger.”

Once the storm abated, the radar was looking great for the moment, and I hurried outside to set up our amplification equipment and lead our trio in a brief warmup. The sun came out, and our music was a cheerful accompaniment as guests tentatively walked out to the ceremony area, while venue staff quickly wiped the rainwater off all 250 chairs and replaced the beautiful flower arrangements.

Torrential rain, thunder, lighting, and hail didn’t stop this couple from having an elegant outdoor wedding ceremony at Spruce Mountain Ranch in Larkspur, Colorado. When I arrived 1 ½ hours before the ceremony began to set everything up for our trio, I could already hear the thunder menacing in the distance. As the ceremony time drew closer, so did the storm, and soon everyone was gathered under the shelter looking at radar and weather predictions.

The traditional Romanian wedding ceremony was filled with prayers, music performed by various family members, and wonderful stories and antidotes about the couple. It was supposed to be 1 hour and 15 minutes long, but it looked like another storm was approaching, and it had to be cut a little short as big fat drops of rain began to fall once again. We played music after the ceremony finished as guests went on to the remainder of the celebration, which would take place inside the lodge.

Flute and String Trio Classical and Popular Wedding Ceremony Music at the Brown Palace in Denver, Colorado

It was a cold and blustery February afternoon in Denver, Colorado on the day that my flute and string trio played for this winter wedding ceremony. Inside the luxurious Brown Palace it was like a different world, and the perfect setting for an incredibly romantic wedding. The elegant stained glass windows made the room into a sanctuary and blocked out the gusty winter winds and bustling city sounds from downtown Denver.

Our trio played classical music and set the mood as guests arrived. During the ceremony, the bride’s mother sung the Jewish wedding blessings in Hebrew, and a feeling of perfect peace filled the room. The ceremony was lovely to watch, and I never tire of seeing two people who are obviously soul mates joined together in marriage.

Afterwards, it was time for everyone to feast, and we played lively modern music as everyone ate. The groom was so fun to work with, and very interested in every aspect of the music, so I enjoyed putting together a great custom set list to keep everyone celebrating throughout the evening. Everyone enjoyed our music so much that they clapped for us in between songs.

We also had the opportunity to play two first dance songs, and we accompanied the vocals and guitar music with flute and strings. We played “To Make You Feel My Love” and “This I Promise You” and it was a beautiful moment.

We finished playing the dinner music with one of the groom’s favorite songs - a rousing rendition of the “Star Wars” theme! Then I got a request to play the theme from Jurassic Park, which I did briefly, to everyone’s delight.

From the Groom:
“Christen and her crew are all super talented, displayed the utmost professionalism, and are a pleasure to work with with our Feb 2019 wedding. They even were willing to work with us and the musicians in our wedding party to create an ensemble that made the first dance songs extra special. Christen is super accommodating and can't recommend her enough.”

Flute Trio at the Design Studio in Niwot, Colorado

BoulderSymphony01.jpg

This weekend I played classical music in a flute trio representing the Boulder Symphony. We played for a partner of the symphony, the Design Studio in Niwot, Colorado. I was charmed with Niwot's original old west style 2nd Ave. which I believe was their main street. The Design Studio was hosting their grand opening and it was quite a classy event. In addition to our live music, there was beautiful original art displayed throughout the store and a large variety of specialty food and drinks.

Flute Trio Wedding Ceremony Music at Vail Interfaith Chapel

VailChapel01.jpg

Recently, our flute trio (flute, viola, cello) played classical and contemporary wedding ceremony music at Vail Interfaith Chapel in Vail, Colorado. We always love playing at Vail Chapel because of the beautiful acoustics that carry our sound throughout the sanctuary. Our very busy bride had a high stress job, so after a short consultation, I put together a music set list for her prelude and worked with her day-of coordinator for the details. I mixed classical and contemporary music and chose songs based on the bride's musical preference. The ceremony was emotional and joyful and the couple had the support of a lot of friends and family. After we played the recessional, a bagpiper played outside and led everyone to the reception site. We left the Vail Chapel to a gorgeous autumn day.

In early June, our flute trio (flute, viola, cello) played for an elegant wedding ceremony up in Beaver Creek, Colorado. First, we enjoyed Michael Lancaster's skillful bagpipe performance as the guests arrived and then our trio finished playing the prelude music with some elegant classical selections. After the ceremony, we played a number of contemporary and popular songs to entertain the guests during the cocktail hour. We also played "A Sky Full of Stars" by Coldplay. This song is a favorite of the bride's, and I made a special arrangement of the song for our trio to play by her request. The wedding ceremony couldn't have gone more smoothly than under the watchful eye of Meg Stepanek of Gemini Event Planning.

Flute Trio Wedding Ceremony Music in Vail, Colorado

Our flute trio had a wonderful time playing for this wedding ceremony on a beautiful, sunny, blustery day on the Vail Wedding Deck. The sunflowers and the still-green hills made a glorious backdrop for the bride and groom.

Our trio played classical prelude music as the guests arrived. The only song that the bride specifically requested was the "Bridal Chorus" by Wagner, with the melody played on the violin. Our viola player was very flexible and brought her violin along in addition to her viola. Half the time during the prelude and cocktail hour, she accompanied on viola, and half the time, she played the melody on violin. This switching around was actually a really nice change for us musicians and I think that the guests enjoyed the variety in sound.

After the ceremony, we went back down the gondola to the Four Seasons Hotel in Vail. The cocktail reception was held on the elegant Flame Deck of the Marriott Four Seasons. We played classical music there for another hour as the guests enjoyed the food.

The young flower girl was brought down in a flower covered wagon which was a brilliant idea and very sweet.

Flute and String Trio - Wedding Ceremony and Cockail Hour Music at Silverthorne Pavillion

SilverthornePavilion01.jpg

It's always nice to travel from the hot summer weather of Colorado's front range to the mountains, and this time our destination was the town of Silverthorne, where it was a sunny 70 degrees. This wedding was held at the Silverthorne Pavilion which is located by the banks of the Blue River. Our flute, viola, and cello trio played classical prelude music and then traditional wedding processional music that the bride and groom selected together. The wedding ceremony was very sweet and as the couple said the vows they had written for each other, we tried to hold back our tears. Sometimes it doesn't make a difference how many weddings we have played for - each one is beautiful and unique! After the ceremony, we moved to the shaded patio where we played a mix of classical and popular music as the guests enjoyed appetizers and drinks. The bride and groom had several song requests for their cocktail hour music and I put together the remainder of our set list using those songs as my inspiration.

Flute and String Trio at the Lodge at Cordillera in Edwards, CO

Cordillera01.jpg

Recently, we enjoyed spectacular views from the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera in Edwards, Colorado. This very busy bride asked us to select her wedding ceremony music for her, and we took care of everything so she could focus on getting married. With severe thunderstorms the previous day, everything had to be moved indoors, and rain continued to threaten on the wedding day. However, the following afternoon the sun came out and the bride had her beautiful outdoor wedding after all. Our trio serenaded the guests with classical music as they came to their seats and then we played for the ceremony. Afterwards, we moved down to the pool area where we played classical music for the cocktail hour.

Flute, Viola, and Cello Trio - Boulder Symphony Orchestra and Sotheby's Realty

I had a wonderful time these past two weeks playing music for for Sotheby's Realty, a sponsor of the Boulder Symphony Orchestra. Other members of the symphony joined me to form a flute, viola, and cello trio. Our first performance was at Sotheby's Realty where they held an elegant Boulder Symphony fundraising event. The event was a great success and I want to thank everyone who gives our symphony support - you truly make a difference!

The second performance was at one of Sotheby's open houses, where we played as potential buyers toured the home. Our music carried very well in this house because it was large and open, and our classical music complimented the classical overtones in the home. We also had spectacular views! This home was situated at the end of a road in the hills above Boulder and was surrounded by open space. From there, we could clearly see Boulder right below us, north to Long's Peak, and south all the way to Pikes' Peak. I loved playing in this beautiful location and was fascinated to finally see what it's like in the Boulder foothills. I love playing in situations where I can interact with our audience and this was certainly one of those times. Our music was well received and the Realtor showing the home was warm and friendly.

Flute and String Wedding Ceremony Music at the Greenbriar Inn, Boulder

On Saturday, our flute, viola, and cello trio played for a wedding ceremony at the beautiful Greenbriar Inn located in North Boulder. The couple got married outside surrounded by warm autumn colors drenched in late afternoon sunshine. This couple chose to select all of their own music including their own prelude music. They chose favorites ranging from classical, to ragtime and popular. I made several special music arrangements for our trio to play including “New York, New York”, “I Feel Pretty”, and “When I’m 64”. We played the prelude as the guests enjoyed light refreshments, and just as the sun began to descend towards the mountains behind the "Chuppah" (traditional Jewish wedding canopy), the wedding ceremony began. The vows went by quickly as the couple chose to say their "I do's" in unison, and guests did various readings. Once the sun set, there was a sharp chill in the air, and everyone went inside to enjoy a warm fire and refreshments.

Flute and String Trio, Wedding Ceremony Music at Gabriel’s Northern Italian Restaurant in Sedalia

A short while ago, I drove south of Denver to play music for a wedding ceremony and reception in the small town of Sedalia, the home of Gabriel's Northern Italian Restaurant. Gabriel's is a darling Victorian restaurant with a wraparound porch, gardens, and a large stone patio perfectly sized for events and wedding ceremonies. This wedding was to be held in the garden area accompanied by our flute, violin, and cello trio. This was a beautiful outdoor wedding and everyone enjoyed the sunny day that wasn't too hot. This wedding, as with all outdoor weddings, offered a few complications. As we played the prelude music, I had a run-in with a horsefly who kept giving me painful bites on my legs. I knew the music had to go on and I kept playing as smoothly as I could until he finally got bored with me right around the time the ceremony began. However, just as the minister asked the couple to repeat their vows, we heard a very loud, long whistle and a train went roaring by, right behind the guests, and for several moments, it was impossible to hear anything. The minister made a few false starts which were interrupted by more whistles but the couple took it all in stride, and after a good-natured laugh and a little bit of waiting, the ceremony went on and they were married. We then played a lively recessional and transitioned into more upbeat classical music during the outdoor reception.

Now Offering a String Quartet and a String Trio

It's time to go traditional, and I am pleased to announce that you can now hire a string quartet or a string trio right here through my website. String music will add a touch of elegance and class to your wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, or your special event. The formal sound and appearance of stringed instruments make them a very popular choice for brides. If you would like to hire a quartet or a trio but want a more unique and varied sound, you can replace the first violin with the flute. The flute has a smooth sound that contrasts beautifully with that of stringed instruments.
