Six Centuries of Cello Duets and Trios - A Cello Concert

You are invited to a cello concert to enjoy Six Centuries of Cello Duets and Trios! The concert will be presented on Tuesday, May 17th 2022 at the Arbor House in Golden, Colorado.

I join my cello duet partner, Molly Niven, along with Susan Crisfield, to raise funds to support Friendship Bridge, an organization empowering indigenous women in Guatemala. All proceeds will go to support Friendship Bridge.

The concert begins at 7:00 pm, but please come at 6:30pm to enjoy a glass of wine or beer and visit our Guatemalan market. You will also enjoy a flute Choro by myself, and a 'musical dessert' on the nyckelharpa by Susan!

String Quartet Wedding Ceremony and Cocktail Hour Music at Highlands Ranch Manor

We loved playing music for this traditional Jewish wedding ceremony, and it was the perfect way to spend a cold December afternoon and evening! Our string quartet played classical and instrumental favorites as the guests arrived, and our music carried beautifully in the big open ceremony space. The bride selected “Married Life” from Up for her recessional, and the couple even playfully danced to the song when they reached the end of the aisle. Of course, after that, I had to watch the movie again! This couple was just as sweet and in love as the couple in the movie, and it was wonderful.

For the cocktail hour, the couple requested more classical music with the addition of some Disney and show tunes. I put together a program that flowed seamlessly from one style to the next, and there was even some more impromptu dancing from the guests as we played the show tunes.

This romantic Labor Day weekend wedding ceremony took place at the Flagstaff House in Boulder, Colorado. Our flute and cello duo added the perfect musical touch as guests arrived and enjoyed the stunning views over Boulder from the Flagstaff House terraces.

The bride asked me to choose a mix of classical and contemporary music to play during the prelude as guests arrived, and I chose a selection of some of our favorite songs. After the ceremony, we continued to play as guests began enjoying cocktails, and then we turned it over to the DJ for the reminder of the evening.

After the wedding, the bride was so happy with the special ambiance that our live music added for her wedding day!

This summer, our violin and cello duo played music for a wedding ceremony at the Oaks at Plum Creek. The couple requested a set list of modern music, which we played as guests arrived.

The weather was very blustery and threatening rain, so the ceremony began early and concluded just as the first fat drops of rain began to fall. Just as we finished playing the recessional song, it began to pour in earnest, and we felt fortunate that we were under a canopy covering to protect our instruments!

This couple had gorgeous weather for their outdoor wedding ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch. To make the planning easier for this very busy couple, I had the privilege of working with the bride’s mom on most of the details. She was an absolute pleasure to get to know and coordinate with. It was a little bit of a guessing game, but we settled on a contemporary music set list that we thought the couple would love, and they did!

Our flute and strings trio (flute, viola, cello) played both before and after the ceremony, and I accompanied our music with lively beats on our drum machine. With 200 guests in the outdoor setting, I boosted our sound with my professional amplification system, and everyone was able to hear us beautifully. The ceremony was stunning, and I loved the two adorable Golden Doodles who were part of the processional!

This wedding ceremony took place on a perfect summer day in early August at the beautiful Della Terra Mountain Chateau in Estes Park, Colorado. I played flute accompanied by my cellist for both the wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. The bride wanted music that was fun and romantic, and she loved the Beatles and Disney music.

We played a mix of romantic classical and modern music for the prelude as guests arrived. For the cocktail hour, we played lively modern songs, and got toes tapping with background beats on my drum machine.

In July, our string trio enjoyed playing for a wedding ceremony and cocktail hour at Wedgewood Brittany Hill in Thornton, Colorado. The bride walked down the aisle and everything went as planned, until the bride spontaneously began kissing her soon-to-be husband! At the gentle admonition of the officiant, she fell into the groom’s arms, laughing.

It threatened to rain, and we even saw some lightning, but this turned out to be the first of 22 weddings in a row where it actually didn’t rain during, right before, or right after a ceremony.

Our string trio played a few classical pieces selected by the bride before the ceremony, and afterwards during cocktails, we played set list of romantic and upbeat pop song covers.

My violinist and I loved playing beautiful music for this couple, who were finally celebrating their vows before family and friends. Their ceremony date was exactly one year after they were married in a private ceremony in 2020. The ceremony took place at the Lionsgate Center’s Dove House in Lafayette, Colorado.

It was a very meaningful and special occasion, and we were so glad to be a part of it! We played elegant classical music that the bride selected, both as guests arrived and after the ceremony concluded. The rain held off just long enough for a lovely outdoor ceremony, and cooling cloud cover.

After a week-long spring heatwave, storms moved through just in time to provide a beautiful cool afternoon for this couple’s wedding ceremony. The storms moved off just before it was time for the guests to be transported up the mountain on the gondola - perfect timing!

I enjoyed playing my flute, accompanied by my guitarist this July for the Crown Financial/Christian Economic Forum reception and banquet. The reception was held outside on the lawn by the Beaver Creek Park Hyatt, and we played a selection of jazz and pop tunes. Since everyone was traveling in from Tennessee, we included some iconic John Denver songs to give the attendees the true Colorado mountain feel.

After the reception, we played indoors for the banquet portion of the event. We played classical music as the attendees enjoyed dinner.

I just loved working with this bride on her wedding ceremony music! She was so easy to work with, and kind and intelligent. She dreamed of walking down the aisle to a song called “Celtic Dawn” by Roy Todd, and I made a special arrangement of the song for string trio. I sent her an audio file of the arrangement, and she used it to time her walk down the aisle prior to her wedding day. She ended up doing it perfectly, and was just approaching the groom when we played the big crescendo towards the end. I chose the remaining music, which was a combination of lively and romantic classical music.

I played cello along with my violinist for this fun and sweet wedding ceremony amidst the July wildflowers on the Holy Cross Event Deck. We were crossing our fingers for no rain, and the weather stayed sunny and dry for this Mississippi bride. The haze from the California wildfires was thick in the mountains that day, and it gave the landscape a soft and dreamlike quality.

As we were setting up to play, we had a freak accident! As I was kneeling to set up, the wind carried the patio umbrella that was over us right out of the stand! The umbrella pole hit me right in the center of the forehead! I was very dazed and felt sick, so we asked for help and I was carted off to the medic. The folks at the wedding deck promptly replaced our umbrella with a more secure one, but I’ll be double checking that every umbrella is secured in its stand for the rest of my life now!

I was grateful to be able to play music despite being very dizzy! I didn’t get any photos of the wedding because of my injury, but John Cain was so generous in sharing his professional photos with me! The photos are stunning and made even more so by the wildflowers, which were prettier than they’ve ever been, due to all the rain we’ve been getting.

The bride let me select all of her prelude and ceremony music, only requesting nothing sad and no tears! She said in her wonderful Southern accent, “I don’t want to be bawlin’ as I walk down the aisle”. I think we succeeded with a selection of upbeat classical and contemporary music, and there wasn’t a single tear but smiles all around!

Our string quartet had a wonderful time playing music for this wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception! We played a short prelude of classical and traditional music, and then switched to upbeat contemporary music for the cocktails and reception. The “Flower Boi” played his part perfectly and made us all laugh!

As we played “Forever, and Ever, Amen” during the prelude, I heard a hint of singing from the guests. During the reception, the singing was a little louder while we played “Just the Way You Are”. I couldn’t resist, and we launched into “Take Me Home, Country Roads'“, and the whole room erupted in enthusiastic, off-key singing!

We continued playing lively contemporary music and finished with a requested encore performance of “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. There was so much energy throughout the evening, and we were enjoying playing so much, that we didn’t realize how hungry we had become. The couple had arranged for us to eat food from the buffet afterwards and it was very welcome gesture.

String Trio Wedding Ceremony Music at the Overlook Chapel at YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado, Flute and Strings by Christen Stephens

This July, my team and I played music for a wedding ceremony at the YMCA of the Rockies Overlook Chapel, which is at the top of Emerald Mountain. We arrived at the chapel after a drive up a winding dirt mountain road. The mountaintop felt wild and isolated, and it was completely silent except for the breeze in the trees and distant thunder.

As we warmed up and did sound check, we were swarmed by biting flies, which were enjoying the fact that we couldn’t really defend ourselves while we were playing our instruments. It was a relief when storm clouds covered the hot sun and the wind blew the worst of the flies away. When it was time to start the wedding, the mountaintop was still empty of people except for us and the officiant. The thunder rumbled louder and we saw lightning, and we hoped that everyone would arrive before the storm did!

Soon everyone arrived at once in a caravan of cars, and we played one prelude song and then launched into the bride’s song so that she could be married before the storm came. The bride walked down the aisle to a special arrangement that I made of “Precious Love” by James Morrison, a song that was meaningful to her.

The ceremony was really quick, and just as the couple was pronounced husband and wife, a few fat raindrops had begun to fall. People hurried away quickly, and we wrapped up the recessional song so that we could get to safety. We packed up under the shelter of our little canopy, during a deluge of wind, rain, flooding, and lightning.

Afterwards, we all made it safely to the Twin Owls Steakhouse, and we played lively contemporary music to entertain the guests during the cocktail reception.

It was a cool and crisp July morning at Carter Park Pavilion in Breckenridge, Colorado - the perfect day for a wedding! The groom’s favorite instrument is the flute, and the bride’s favorite instrument is the cello, so our flute and cello duo was the just the right fit for their wedding music.

We played a mix of classical music and hymns as guests arrived and as they enjoyed brunch afterwards. It was a casual ceremony, and everyone was relaxed and having a wonderful time.

An older couple came up to us and requested “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Bach, which was the song that they had walked down the aisle to on their own wedding day! As we played they sat and listened with their arms wrapped around each other, and their love for each other was sweet and inspiring!

This July, our flute and string trio played for an emotional and joyful wedding ceremony at the Chapel at Beaver Creek.

Our trio played prelude music as guests arrived, and our music set list was one I worked with the bride to create. She wanted modern and recognizable tunes with some more traditional classical selections in the mix.

The ceremony was incredibly joyful and heartfelt, and the music selections really reflected the personality of the couple. After we played the recessional song, and at the couple’s request, we launched into a rousing rendition of the Star Wars main theme, much to the delight of a few of the guests!

It was such a delight to work with this couple, and I felt privileged to be a part of their wedding celebration! The groom absolutely loves strings, and having live string music at their wedding was a very important part of this couple’s special day. We began by playing romantic contemporary prelude music as guests arrived before the ceremony, and we added energy with lively pop and rock tunes during cocktails. The bride also requested some special songs that her family loves, including “When I’m 64” (Beatles) , “Over the Rainbow” from Wizard of Oz, and A Whole New World.

My musicians and I loved playing beautiful music for this elegant wedding ceremony and cocktail hour! The couple chose our flute and strings quartet, with the addition of a harpist for the bridal entrance. The bride was planning to ride in on a white horse as we played the “Great Fairy Fountain” from Zelda on flute and harp. I didn’t see exactly what happened because I was playing, but one of the many wild turkeys roaming the area spooked the horse and the bride couldn’t ride in, but it was true Colorado mountain wedding experience!

We played a contemporary music program with pop, rock, and country music selections. For the prelude, we began with slower and more romantic music, and then we really lifted the tempo after the ceremony as guests enjoyed cocktails and hors-d’ourves.

The sun came out on a stormy day just in time for this couple to have a beautiful wedding ceremony at the Sanctuary Golf Course in Sedalia, Colorado. Our string trio played peaceful classical prelude music to give the setting a feeling of calm and serenity. The stunning pavilion felt like a safe haven from the storm, and provided the perfect acoustics for our music. In addition to our live music, there was an artist doing a live painting of the wedding scene, adding an additional and unique artistic touch to this couple’s wedding day.
