A Warm Family Wedding Celebration at Dillon Marina Park: Flute and Violin Duo

Flute and Violin Wedding Ceremony Music at Dillon Marina Park in Dillon, Colorado, Photo by Christen Stephens

This summer, our flute and violin duo was delighted to play for a warm wedding ceremony at the charming Dillon Marina Park. The pavilion that the ceremony was held in overlooked the picturesque Dillon Reservoir, complete with white boat sails against brilliant blue water. The wedding was held on a peaceful weekday, and the park’s usual hustle and bustle gave way to a serene and intimate atmosphere.

From the Bride:

“Christen and the violinist were amazing to work with. My husband and I can be indecisive and she was able to guide us in our song selections to make the perfect playlist. She even coordinated with my dad (our officiant) a week before the wedding and gave him a boost of confidence as he was extremely nervous. Christen went above and beyond and we are so happy she was able to play at our wedding.” - Marcie S., Bride

My violinist and I set a lively mood as we played an elegant selection of upbeat Baroque music as guests began to gather. Following the prelude music, the ceremony began with a unique touch, as the flower girl and ring bearer handed out wands for guests to wave during the recessional. The bride’s father, serving as the officiant, was so nervous he almost skipped the rest of the processional entirely. With good humor and grace, the bride simply reminded him to wait as she nodded to us to begin playing the processional music for the wedding party.

The rest of the ceremony was very sweet, and the couple’s dog even got to be a witness on their marriage license, since that’s now a legally binding option here in wonderful and wild Colorado.

Shortly after the ceremony concluded, we played “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” by Frankie Valli. This was a special music arrangement that I made for our flute and violin duo, at the bride’s request. It was such a pretty and romantic choice! The melody filled the pavilion as the couple shared a sweet first dance. Unfortunately, a storm was moving in, and the couple started to struggle as big gusts of wind blew through the pavilion. Unfortunately, a few particularly big gusts of wind swept through, sending guest favors flying and cutting the dance short as the bride raced to rescue them. We gracefully ended the song early and paused for a moment until the worst of the wind guests passed before we resumed playing.

On a crisp November day in the picturesque town of Vail, Colorado, our flute and violin duo played music for an elegant and formal church wedding ceremony. Our music carried beautifully in the church as we played a mix of soothing classical and modern music as guests arrived. The bride requested the nostalgic “Love Me Tender” by Elvis, and I wrote an arrangement specially for our duo to play during the prelude.

Following the ceremony, once the guests left and family photos were complete, the newlyweds we’re excited to take a photo with us! My violinist had to go home to care for her newborn, but I was happy to oblige, helping the couple to celebrate every memory from their special day.

On a crisp winter day in Estes Park, our duo traveled to the charming Bristlecone Inn in Estes Park to play music for an enchanting vow renewal ceremony. The couple had originally planned to hire me to play live music for their wedding in 2022, but due to the Omicron variant of Covid, they decided to elope and renew their vows in front of family and friends one year later.

For their relaxed vow renewal ceremony, the couple requested traditional Irish music along with other favorites that they were excited to hear, including music from Lord of the Rings, and movie music. The sound of our flute and violin duo filled the cozy and intimate space with warmth and elegance.

As guests arrived at the Bristlecone Inn, they were greeted by our lively and upbeat traditional Irish music. We played a mix of fast Irish music and other dramatic and upbeat songs to accompany the appetizers and cocktails during the happy hour. The music set the tone for a lighthearted and joy-filled celebration.

  3. Allegro from Concerto in E Major, Op. 8 #1, Spring (Vivaldi)

  4. Dennis Murphy’s Polka (Irish)

  5. Si Bheag, Si Mhor (Irish)

After the happy hour, it was time for the main event. The bride and groom renewed their vows, surrounded by their closest family and friends. The bride looked stunning in a magnificent black gown, while the groom wore a traditional kilt. The ceremony was filled with emotion and love from close family and friends.

Following the ceremony, the bride and groom cut the cake, and then it was time for their first dance. They chose the delightful “Concerning Hobbits" from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. The dance ended in giggles, because “Concering Hobbits” is very hard to dance to, but it was all part of the charm of their wonderful day.

For lunch, they requested mellow music and slow Irish pieces. Here are some samples from the dinner music:

  2. Morning Star (Irish)

  3. Clair de Lune (Debussy)

  4. Carry on My Wayward Son (Kansas)

While we were playing, we noticed that a young girl was absolutely fascinated with our music and instruments. Between songs, we had the opportunity to show her our instruments, and now she’s wants to learn to play both the flute and violin!

Afterwards, we were invited to eat a meal of some of the best burgers and cake I’ve ever had. I wish I had the name of the baker because not only did the cake taste incredible, but it looked amazing!

The couple's decision to have live music for their special day added a personal touch and created an intimate and memorable atmosphere that will be cherished for years to come.

A Golden Autumn Wedding at Lynn Britt Cabin in Snowmass, Colorado: Flute and Violin Duo

Imagine a scene right out of a storybook, with a moody sky, vibrant autumn foliage, and an intimate mountain cabin wedding. This wedding celebration took place at Lynn Britt Cabin in Snowmass, Colorado, and my violinist and I loved being a part of a very special day for this wonderful couple.

After punching in the gate code, we wound our way up the mountainside, and the rustic setting of Lynn Britt Cabin came into view. The foliage was in its peak glory against a moody sky, and chic decor offset the wild beauty of the mountainside. It rained as we played a prelude of traditional classical and contemporary music. As we played, the sun suddenly emerged in a glorious display, illuminating the surroundings with its warm light, and the ceremony was quickly pushed up to take advantage of this moment. The bride and groom exchanged their vows bathed in golden sunlight.

Following the ceremony, we continued to play a set of romantic contemporary music as the guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers, and took advantage of the last few rays of sunshine. The weather once again turned cold and rainy after a time, and the cocktail hour was likewise cut short so that the guests could take shelter in the heated reception tent.

From the Bride:

“We were so thrilled Christen and her team were available for our wedding. She was a joy to work with, was on top of everything and made me feel like this was one major item I could check off my list and not have to worry. Extremely professional and helpful when we weren’t sure which choice of music we wanted to go with. I would choose her 100x over.” Kristen L.

This Ohio bride didn’t let a late spring snowstorm dampen her spirits for her intimate mountain wedding ceremony! We got a little over a foot of snow, but most of it had melted by the afternoon. However, it was still quite chilly when we had all originally been expecting an outdoor ceremony in warm spring sunshine. Because of this, the wedding was moved indoors to Dannen Chapel, and it brought everyone together in a way that the outdoor wedding wouldn’t have.

The bride wanted to hear happy, simple and relaxing music, and we played a selection of classical and contemporary music that she picked out. She did a great job, because her music selections filled the prelude time exactly.

This summer, our flute and violin duo played for a joyful wedding ceremony at the Taharaa Mountain Lodge in Estes Park, Colorado. This new venue has a beautiful reception and dining building with a large covered porch where guests can take in the peaceful views and fresh mountain air. The outdoor wedding chapel features a scenic space with a rustic arbor and patio area, blended into the landscape with surrounding boulders.

We learned two special songs for the ceremony. The first song was “Blue Sky” by the Allman Brothers. When the bride’s parents were still in college, her dad would bring his stereo out to the lawn in front of her mom’s dorm and play the song in honor of her (just like in the movies!). The second special song was “Carry on My Wayward Son” by Kansas. This was a special surprise for the groom, and it’s a meaningful song to him.

For the prelude, the bride requested upbeat, welcoming, and modern music selections. I put together a mix of pop and rock songs including selections from the Beatles and Coldplay, I accompanied some of the more upbeat tunes with beats on my drum machine, and the guests loved the energetic feel of our music.

From the Bride:

“Christen was one of the first vendors we contacted when we started the wedding planning process. I had stumbled on her website and found myself getting teary-eyed listening to samples on her website while imagining myself, in my dress, on my wedding day, walking down to the aisle to the music. I immediately messaged her and booked the date! Christen was so easy to work with- very fast responses, organized, professional and an overall lovely human. She even learned two special songs for us! One song was my parents song, which I walked down the aisle to (they were so moved with this selection), and the other was symbolic for my husband and his service in the military, and that song was our recessional (my husband was so surprised and moved). I didn't have any time to talk with Christen, or her violinist colleague, Brightin, on our wedding day itself (I had no idea how busy I would be that day!), but everything went perfectly as planned and their music was loved by all of the guests. We had several guests comment on how much they enjoyed the more modern music we selected and how the music really created and upbeat and positive energy for the ceremony. I strongly recommend Christen to any couple planning their wedding! She is a real professional, a talented musician and a kind person!”

After a week-long spring heatwave, storms moved through just in time to provide a beautiful cool afternoon for this couple’s wedding ceremony. The storms moved off just before it was time for the guests to be transported up the mountain on the gondola - perfect timing!

The bride wanted a classic feel with a modern flair for her wedding ceremony and music. She chose our flute and violin duo for that classic touch, and mostly modern song selections, which we played to welcome the guests as they arrived from the gondola. After the ceremony, we amped up the energy with some lively Coldplay selections accompanied by beats on my drum machine.

Our flute and violin duo was the perfect fit for this intimate early spring wedding ceremony in Breckenridge, Colorado. I’m beginning to think of this beautiful rental home as the “Breckenridge Wedding Rental”, because it’s become a popular venue for weddings.

This busy bride was excited to have the beauty of live music for her wedding ceremony, but other than her choice of Pachelbel’s Canon in D for her walk down the aisle, she left the music selections to me. I put together a beautiful music program that I felt matched her joyful personality and the rustic and stunning Colorado mountain setting.

A fresh blanket snow had fallen the night before, and the ceremony setting looked just like Christmas despite the April calendar date. It even started to lightly snow towards the end of the ceremony, and the effect was magical!

We continued to play after the ceremony as guests mingled indoors and enjoyed refreshments before the dinner was to be served. I was so glad that our music put a smile on everyone’s faces and made the event feel so joyful and festive.

Our flute and violin duo is the perfect music choice for an intimate wedding ceremony.

This vibrant couple didn’t let the pandemic get in the way of their 2020 wedding plans, but their plans did change many times leading up to their wedding, with the safety of their family and friends in mind. They finally ended up with an intimate wedding ceremony at a privater rental home on the top of a mountain, and the end result was stunning!

Our flute and violin duo set the mood with elegant music that the bride chose, including “Ave Maria” (Schubert), “What a Wonderful World” (Louis Armstrong), and “River Flows in You” (Yiruma). The ceremony was held outside with a panoramic mountain view as the backdrop.

The bride walked down the aisle to a very special rendition of “A Thousand Years”, which my violinist sung while I accompanied her on flute. From our perch above the ceremony, we could see elk leaping and playing on the mountains as the ceremony was taking place.

From the Bride:

It was my first time playing wedding music at Camp Hale in Leadville, Colorado, and I fell in love with this stunning location. This little gem was quite a surprise because it’s so far off the beaten trail, and it’s truly surrounded by wilderness. I reached the camp after driving for many miles through the mountains, but when I arrived at the wedding site, I was greeted by well manicured lawns surrounded by glistening blue water, all with the backdrop of the wild Colorado mountains.

Just as it was time for us to set up to play prelude music, a storm system moved through and everyone was crossing their fingers that an outdoor ceremony would still be able to happen. The sun did come out just as it was time for us to begin playing. There were very strong outflow winds after the storm. Normally, the wind steals the sound from my flute, but this was the first time I had the chance to try out my new Wind-D-Fender, and it worked like a charm! Our amplification also helped carry our sound loud and clear across the island over the sound of the wind.

It’s hard to know what to expect from the Colorado mountains in October, and just two days prior, we had a huge snow storm and frigid temperatures. However, this day the sun shone brightly and the temperatures warmed into the afternoon. The autumn foliage was just finishing up, and the snow was melting quickly, a celebration of both autumn and winter.

After the ceremony, we moved to the outdoor patio where we continued playing a mix of lively classical and contemporary music for the cocktail hour. The sun was setting by now and it was becoming chilly, and we were glad that cocktails finished just in time for everyone to move indoors by the warm fire.

Flute and Violin Duo Wedding Ceremony and Cocktail Hour Music at the Arrabelle in Vail

I knew from the moment that I spoke to this bride that she was a lovely person, and she was indeed such a delight to work with! This couple in their 50’s hired my flute and violin duo to accompany their wedding ceremony and cocktail hour with classical and popular music to give a mood of understated and classy elegance.

We played classical music selections as guests arrived and to set the mood for the ceremony to follow. For the processional of the wedding party and the bride, we played “Don’t Stop Belivin’” by Coldplay, a special music arrangement for flute and violin that I made specially for the couple. The bride said that the moment she heard us play, she just knew that our music was the most perfect choice for her wedding, and it brought happy tears to her eyes. The happy tears continued as the couple was joyfully united in marriage.

Imagine my surprise when I recognized the bride’s sister when she walked up to do a reading! She was the mom of one of my former flute students. My student and her mom were equally surprised to recognize me as the one playing the flute, and we had a brief and happy reunion.

From the Bride:

“One week post-wedding and we and our guests are still singing the praises of Flute and Strings by Christen. Christen was the only musician I spoke with, unlike the myriad of vendors I spoke with virtually every other aspect of her wedding, instinctively I felt she was exactly what we were looking for. Boy was I correct. She is first and foremost an exceptionally talented musician, which you can hear from her music samples. She also offered a wide variety of music to choose from for both the ceremony and reception, and were flexible and accommodating to my own processional selection. She was quick to respond to my questions, highly organized and professional and showed up early on the big day. And then they played. It was WONDERFUL!!! Having beautiful live music during the ceremony was important to us and to have it played so well really made the day extra perfect. I can't say enough about Christen.” Bobbi B.

Add a touch of class and elegance to your wedding ceremony with the lovely combination of flute and violin. You can listen to music samples here.

I spent the Halloween of 2018 in the best way possible - playing for a romantic Colorado mountain wedding ceremony! The bride and groom were from Florida, and they had their outdoor wedding ceremony in Estes Park at a private home.

The drive to Estes Park is one of my favorite drives because of the beautiful scenery. It was made even better by the fresh snow that had fallen the night before. The snow was still clinging to the evergreens and weighing them down like heavy white frosting.

The house was in a grand setting with a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. I played flute along with my violinist inside, next to the crackling wood fire in the fireplace. I set up my speaker outside so that our music could be heard both indoors and out.

We played an elegant mix of classical music, and a few modern songs. I made a special arrangement of “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera and “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from Cinderella for the bride. Just before the bride walked down the aisle, we happened to be playing “A Postcard to Henry Purcell” from Pride and Prejudice, and it was such a romantic beginning to the evening festivities.

The wedding ceremony took place outside, and even though it was chilly, the sun shone brightly in a very blue sky. The small group of family and friends stood during the short ceremony. Afterwards, we continued playing more lively classical music as the guests mingled inside and outside.

“It was a Dream Come True”

From the Bride:
My Wedding was on Halloween this year and as a special touch Christen surprised us with Cinderella- “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”, and a few other Disney classics! It was a dream come true and I couldn’t have picked a better company to play for my Wedding. I truly felt like a Princess in white with the music playing perfectly on every step I made down the aisle. Thank you for making our day Perfect!”

Gavotte (Bach), Largo from Winter (Vivaldi), Minuet (Boccherini), Air from Water Music (Handel), Ave Verum Corpus (Mozart), A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes from Cinderella, All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera, Allegro from Spring (Vivaldi)

Wedding Processional Music:

In late August, my flute and violin duo enjoyed playing for a mountain wedding ceremony at the Vail Wedding Deck. I left Denver well prepared because the weather forecast was predicting cool weather, rain, and thunderstorms. I really hoped that this Wisconsin couple could have the Colorado mountain wedding of their dreams, despite the weather predictions.

As I ascended the mountains and drove to Vail, the temperature dropped into the 40's and it was pouring rain. By the time I reached Vail, the rain had ended and the air had a cool and fresh feel to it. The smoke from the summer wildfires was momentarily completely gone and everything felt bright and clean.

The sun started to peek through the clouds, and as the guests arrived, we greeted them and drew them to the seating area with our elegant classical music. In the middle of the ceremony, we played "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis as a beautiful musical interlude, while the guests had a chance to take in the mountain views and to enjoy the completion of their journey to arrive in this epic setting. Most of the guests had a plane flight, car ride, gondola ride, golf cart ride, and walk to arrive at the wedding deck.

We played a lively recessional at the end of the ceremony, and then we played a mix of classical music and Beatles tunes to entertain everyone and put smiles on their faces as photos were being taken.

The big day finally arrived! Ashley contacted me almost two years ago because she wanted to make sure that she reserved our flute and violin duo for her wedding day in Vail. Her special day finally arrived full of sunshine and mid-summer mountain beauty. The Gore Range provided a gorgeous backdrop to the wedding ceremony, which took place outdoors on the Vail Wedding Island. My violinist and I played contemporary prelude music as the guests enjoyed cocktails and socialized before the ceremony. The refreshing drinks kept everyone cool before the ceremony and it also provided lots of great photo opportunities.

The special part of the processional was our collaboration with the bride's best friend and singer, Allie. I made a custom music arrangement of "I Will" by the Beatles and Allie sang along with our duo for the procession of the flower girl and ring bearer. It was the sweetest most meaningful moment, and the fact that the very young ring bearer didn't want to walk down the aisle at all made it even more charming, and brought about some chuckles from everyone.

Flute and Violin Duo Wedding Ceremony Music at Copper Mountain, Colorado

Flute and Violin Wedding Music in Copper

This summer my violinist and I traveled up to beautiful Copper Mountain in Colorado to play for an intimate wedding ceremony. This was my first time on a chair lift and I was ready and excited for the adventure, but I'm also afraid of heights! I managed to load myself and all of my equipment onto the chair, but the chair started to move forward before I was ready, and right away things began to fall off! After some assistance to re-load my things, and after a few tense moments while I got used to the height, I began to relax. I enjoyed the brilliant wildflowers scattered in the green grasses below and the scent of the majestic pines, a scent which I look forward to every time that I visit the mountains. I almost made it to the top when the wind gusted and a few of my things flew off the lift. Later, a wedding guest was so kind and drove his truck down and picked them up for me! I was so grateful. The ride down was much smoother because I had learned some tricks in loading my things. They were also kind enough to stop the chair lift this time long enough for me to get situated. I also found a really helpful bar and footrest that I can bring down for added security. I do believe that I'm an expert at this now!

The wedding ceremony was wonderful. It took place at Solitude Station in the Nature Center Gazebo, which is a beautiful work of architecture in addition to being a perfect shelter. My flute and violin duo played elegant classical music and set the mood for the guests as they arrived. It felt like a small private concert. The ceremony was very short and full of humor and joy. At the bride's request, we surprised the groom and all of the guests by playing the theme from Indiana Jones for the recessional. Everyone laughed as soon as they recognized the tune, and it was a really fun and unexpected moment.

From the Bride: Christen at Flute and Strings was amazing to work with! It was so easy to get our music selections to her and she was quick to respond to any and all questions we had. The day of the wedding could not have gone smoother. Both musicians were punctual and flexible. We originally thought we had a larger ceremony space to work with, but ended up in a smaller venue. Both musicians adapted to the surroundings and didn't miss a beat. My now husband really wanted the Indiana Jones theme music as our recessional and Christen worked with me to have that accomplished as a surprise for him. He was totally shocked and it sounded amazing! We could not thank Christen and her team enough for playing such a memorable ceremony. I would highly recommend!

In July, our flute and violin duo played for an intimate wedding ceremony at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The ceremony took place in the Romantic Gardens, which are green and serene, spilling over with roses and transporting one back to the Victorian Era. Our flute and violin duo played under one of the two small gazebos, and it beautifully amplified our sound and also protected our instruments from the sun and rain. Often it was sunny and raining at the same time and the ceremony began with an unusually heavy gust of wind. Despite the erratic weather and a few hitches before the ceremony began, this flexible couple carried on. The weather calmed down and the sun shone brilliantly for a beautiful finish to this wedding ceremony. Our duo played a selection of classical and more contemporary tunes to keep the guests entertained before the wedding and the bride selected her own processional and recessional songs.

Sample Prelude Music:
Aire from Orpheus (Gluck), Allegro Non Troppo (Popp), Andante from String Quartet in A minor (Schubert), Air from Handel's Water Music, Artist's Life (Strauss), Can't Help Falling in Love (Elvis), Let Me Call You Sweetheart (Bing Crosby)

In July, our flute and violin duo played for a very intimate wedding ceremony at Sapphire Point in Dillon, Colorado. It was such a small wedding ceremony that there weren't actually any guests! Instead, this destination bride decided to have her ceremony professionally recorded and then share the recording with her friends and family members.

Our duo played soothing prelude music before the ceremony as the bride and groom posed for their wedding photos. Then, we cleared the area of curious hikers so that the bride and groom could make their grand entrance down the winding forest path. Our flute and violin duo played "Postcard to Henry Purcell" from "Pride and Prejudice" as the bride and groom walked. After the ceremony, we played a little more and we both even signed the marriage certificate as witnesses, and posed for a few photos with the bride.

From the bride: "Our wedding was just a small elopement at Sapphire Point in Colorado but we couldn't imagine it without music. Not only did Christen give us several song selections but she arranged a song that I requested. She played beautifully and the music helped calm our nerves. I would highly recommend Christen for any size wedding. Her music is exquisite!"

This wedding ceremony at the Denver Botanic Garden was held on a gorgeous day in mid-October. The ceremony was held at the Romantic Gardens, and they were washed in warm sunshine, the birds were singing, and the gardens were alive with autumn blooms. Even the guests from Hawaii kept talking about how beautiful it was. It was quite a change from last year when we were buried in snow at the same time of year! The bride hired our flute and violin duo and her one request was that we play "All of Me" by John Legend so I made an arrangement of the song for flute and violin. There were only about 14 guests, and while they took pictures and mingled before the wedding ceremony, we played a mix of classical and popular music. Because of the small size, this ceremony felt very relaxed and I think that the bride and groom truly enjoyed their special day as they mingled with family members and listened to our music.

Prelude Music:
Air from Orpheus (Gluck), Romanza from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Mozart), Can't Help Falling in Love (Elvis), Allegro Non Troppo (Pop), Simple Gifts, What a Wonderful World, Vivement from The Italian Sonata (Chedeville), Largo from Xerxes (Handel)
