It was the last day of September in the beautiful Colorado mountains, and this couple had the most gorgeous day for their wedding ceremony! The setting at the Westin Riverfront Resort perfectly showcased the peak autumn foliage, mountain and river views, and a blue sky as the backdrop. This Kansas couple certainly experienced the best that Colorado had to offer for their wedding day!

Our quartet was flute and strings (flute, violin, viola, cello), and I played the flute. The bride requested all classical music, and she and her fiancee chose a custom list of romantic pieces to fit the mood that they wanted. After the ceremony, we played two contemporary songs - “At Last” by Etta James, and “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. This contemporary vibe segued into the celebration to come later that day.

Over Labor Day weekend, our flute and strings quartet had the pleasure of playing wedding ceremony and cocktail hour music for a glamorous event in Crested Butte, Colorado. Because we had to drive 5 hours in Labor Day weekend traffic, we all decided to make a weekend of it and stay for a few days. The scenery on some of our hikes was epic!

The rest of the guests were mostly coming up from Texas. That meant they were able to fly into the Gunnison Airport and make the easy drive up to Crested Butte. Most of my clients are actually from Texas because they love Colorado, and because they can easily access the awe-inspiring Colorado mountains.

This wedding celebration took place at Ten Peaks in Crested Butte and the ceremony was held on the outdoor wedding deck, which boasted sweeping mountain views. The couple enhanced the rustic mountain location with lush flowers lining the entire wedding aisle and a full floral bridal arch. As guests arrived, we played a mix of pop, country, and jazz music, personally selected by this fun-loving and relaxed couple. Since it was raining, we played under the tent shelter and amplified our music to the adjacent ceremony area. I used my brand new Bose L1+ Pro speakers, which not only sound great, but eliminate all use of wires, which can easily become trip hazards.

Just as the ceremony was about to begin, the rain cleared away, as if on cue, and the processional began. There were 16 members of family to be seated, and we kept a lively rendition of “Thunderstruck” by ACDC going as they processed down the aisle. Then, we segued to the romantic “La Vie En Rose” for the bride.

After the conclusion of the ceremony, we moved to the cocktail hour location, which was by the Umbrella Bar. We continued to play a lively set of music that the bride chose, as guests enjoyed drinks and refreshments prior to the reception.

On a beautiful summer day, our flute, violin, viola, and cello quartet played for an elegant and modern wedding ceremony at the Black Canyon Inn in Estes Park, Colorado. The ceremony was held in the newer event space called The Boulders at Black Canyon Inn. This is a gorgeous building with a wall that opens up completely to showcase stunning mountain views from the comfort of the indoors. As musicians, we love the lively acoustics in the room.

As guests arrived, our quartet joyfully welcomed them, beginning with traditional classical music, and easing into romantic and slow contemporary music as the ceremony time drew closer.

In the middle of the ceremony, the couple performed a time capsule unity ceremony, and they took their time as we played “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. This song selection delighted many of their family members, who told us later that they recognized the song and loved the sweet moment.

After the ceremony, we moved downstairs as guests enjoyed refreshments during the cocktail hour. We played a mix of classical and contemporary music, keeping the feel upbeat with lively Mozart Divertimentos, Coldplay songs, and other popular favorites.

Royal Wedding Music on a Mountainside: Flute, Trumpet, and Strings

Trumpet, Flute, and String Quintet Wedding Ceremony and Cocktail Hour music at Beano’s Cabin in Beaver Creek, Colorado, Photo by Shane Macomber Weddings

One summer afternoon, we had the pleasure of playing royal music for a lavish mountainside wedding celebration! It was the kind of wedding with outdoor couches and joyous flowers everywhere. Our trumpet, flute, violin, viola, and cello quintet certainly created the perfect feel for this elegant day.

It was also the best planned wedding of the year, due to the diligence of the amazing wedding planner and the mother of the bride. All the bride had to do was to walk down the aisle and enjoy her special day. I worked with the bride’s mother throughout the entire planning process, and she had a very specific vision, which we worked hard to carry out to perfection.

We played a prelude of regency era music, such as the Eine Kline Nachtmusik by Mozart, and selections from Bach and Handel. The mothers couldn’t wait to be escorted down the aisle to the joyful and aristocratic strains of the “Entrance of the Queen of Sheba” by Handel. The bride’s mother adored this song and said that the queen was one lucky lady to have such wonderful song written specially for her! The song was part of Handel’s oratorio “Solomon”, and written long after the actual Queen of Sheba’s death, but I hope she somehow knows about it anyway.

The entire prelude and start of the processional was performed with flute and strings only, and the trumpet was being reserved for the bride’s grand entrance. I didn’t even allow our poor trumpet player to warm up, so that we wouldn’t spoil the surprise! Because of this, I was very impressed that he was able to launch right into the bride’s song without a hitch. Our secret plan didn’t disappoint! Everyone’s attention was grabbed as we all played “Trumpet Tune” by Purcell, with the trumpet at the helm. The bride took her time walking down the aisle, and she was wreathed in smiles.

After a wonderful ceremony, we played a mix of more royal classical music and contemporary songs selected by mom. The trumpet joined us now, and our music gave everything such an air of elegance and grace. The entire evening was such a joyful celebration, and it was such a pleasure to take parts in the key parts of the ceremony with our royal music.

An Email Excerpt from the Mother of the Bride:

“Thank you for the beautiful music at my daughter’s wedding…. I could hear the sweet notes of your flute floating through the air. The beautiful classical music was perfect for the setting at Beano’s. I wish I could go back and play it all again in slow motion so that I could have a better recollection of everything and notice all the tiny details that took so long to plan…it was a blur. Thank you Christen to you and your team.” - Robin H., Mother of the Bride

A Summery Wedding at the Della Terra Mountain Chateau in Estes Park, Colorado: Flute, Violin, Viola, Cello Quartet

Flute and Strings Quartet Wedding Ceremony Music at the Della Terra Mountain Chateau in Estes Park, Colorado

There's something magical about the combination of flute and strings. The way the complimentary sounds of the instruments dance and intertwine, creating a sound that is both elegant and joyful at the same time. Adding to the lovely atmosphere that our music created, this August day was also a day that seemed to be made for a wedding. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and there was a fresh and cool breeze that carried the scent of pine trees through the air.

The bride had chosen our flute and strings quartet, which consists of flute, violin, viola, and cello, a combination in instruments that can be adapted to a wide range of musical styles. For this wedding, the bride had requested a mix of classical and contemporary music for her prelude and ceremony.

It was a privilege to be able to provide music for this wonderful couple’s wedding day, and to help create moments of magic that they will remember for a lifetime. And on this perfect summer's day, my quartet and I had done just that.

From the Mother of the Bride:

“Honest, Dependable, Beautiful Music -
Booking from out of State, can be worrisome. I felt complete ease with this group, and boy did they deliver!”

A Magical Wedding Ceremony at Beano's Cabin in Beaver Creek, Colorado: Flute, Violin, Viola, Cello Quartet

This summer, I played flute along with my string quartet for a very elegant wedding ceremony at Beano’s Cabin in Beaver Creek, Colorado. The event was a black tie affair and the team of vendors was outstanding. The couple requested that our music be upbeat, recognizable, and in keeping with the formal event. The songs that they chose for us to play during the prelude were Clocks (Coldplay), A Sky Full of Stars (Coldplay), At Last (Etta James), All of Me (John Legend), Butterflies (Kacey Musgraves), and Viva La Vida (Coldplay).

It rained right up until the ceremony start time, and then stopped, right on cue. The setting couldn’t have been more beautiful, and our music added a special elegant touch.

Flute with Strings Adds a Magical Touch.

From the Groom:

“Amazing Musical Team!”

"Christen Stephens and her musicians were incredible! My bride wanted a very specific video game song played as she walked down the aisle and Christen's team pulled it off perfectly! They also did a great job with general contemporary music played on classical instruments, and created a great, classy, yet fun, atmosphere during the pre-ceremony time, and cocktail hour! She was always professional and very easy to work with! Highly recommended!”

My musicians and I loved playing beautiful music for this elegant wedding ceremony and cocktail hour! The couple chose our flute and strings quartet, with the addition of a harpist for the bridal entrance. The bride was planning to ride in on a white horse as we played the “Great Fairy Fountain” from Zelda on flute and harp. I didn’t see exactly what happened because I was playing, but one of the many wild turkeys roaming the area spooked the horse and the bride couldn’t ride in, but it was true Colorado mountain wedding experience!

We played a contemporary music program with pop, rock, and country music selections. For the prelude, we began with slower and more romantic music, and then we really lifted the tempo after the ceremony as guests enjoyed cocktails and hors-d’ourves.

Our Flute and Strings Quartet is an Impressive Addition to any Wedding!

Flute and String Quartet Wedding Ceremony Music at the Black Canyon Inn in Estes Park, Colorado

This bride was a very special client of mine because she’s not only a music lover, but she’s also a musician herself. The bride is an opera singer, and she comes from a very musical family, so the music portion of the ceremony was very important to the entire family. The mother of the bride particularly wanted to hear “Sheep May Safely Graze” with two flutes harmonizing at the top. We adjusted our normal quartet to include two flutes, along with a viola, and cello. The result was absolutely delightful and full of lighthearted joy!

From the Bride:

“Absolutely Beautiful”

“I can’t emphasize enough how much we enjoyed working with Christen as well as hearing her and the rest of the quartet at our wedding! Christen is super professional and also very flexible. We were able to have a quartet of two flautists, a cellist, and a violist and with the music we picked, it sounded absolutely magical. We used most of their repertoire list but Christen also was able to play a few extra pieces for us that weren’t, some from operas and some from movies that my husband and I have enjoyed watching together during our relationship. You will not regret hiring these wonderfully talented musicians. Thank you again Christen!”

The bride chose a prelude set list featuring classical music and music with vocals, including opera pieces. During the ceremony, several family members got up and sang, accompanied by Amy’s mom on the piano. The ceremony was fun, funny, and lighthearted.

The couple even printed their wedding music program (left) like a concert program, and included the songs that they selected for their prelude, in order. Everyone clapped for us between songs, just like a concert.

The ranch is a remote campground and rafting center located on the Colorado River. I left my house at 5:30am so that I could have everything set up and ready to go for this pre-breakfast wedding ceremony. The wildfire smoke was thick in the air and made for a stunning sunrise over the mountains (right).

One thing that I love about my job is being able to travel to many interesting and exciting locations across Colorado. Rancho Del Rio in Bond, Colorado was certainly among the more unusual wedding locations that I’ve been to. Most mountain weddings take place in the Colorado mountain resort towns, and until the pandemic happened, this wedding was likewise to be held at a beautiful Breckenridge venue. When that venue temporarily shut down for safety reasons due to the pandemic, the wedding celebration was moved to the fun and outdoorsy Rancho Del Rio.

Before I even arrived, I felt like I was in a different world. The open plains of the Front Range and the thick pine forests of the Colorado resort towns were replaced by dry grasslands, mysterious types of trees, and scrubby unfamiliar shrubbery.

Our elegant quartet music almost felt out of place in such a wild setting, but our music became the focal point that guests were drawn to, and this is where they mingled before the ceremony began. The ceremony was beautiful with the backdrop of the Colorado River, and afterwards, the bride and groom made their getaway in a raft (left).

After the ceremony, we continued to play cheerful music for the breakfast, which the guests enjoyed under a pavilion area.

I was excited to work with this couple because the bride was originally from my home state of Connecticut, and many of her family and guests traveled from there. To reach the Holy Cross Event Deck, guests took the gondola up Vail mountain, and then rode a golf cart to the ceremony site. I enjoyed watching the faces of those coming in from out of town when they saw the view at the ceremony site for the first time. The wildflowers were in full bloom, and because of all the rain, I’ve never seen so many in all of the years I’ve been playing in Vail.

Add the elegance and beauty of live music to your wedding ceremony. Listen to music samples of my flute and strings quartet.

This summer, it rained and stormed almost every afternoon in Vail, Colorado, and the wedding planner and I were completely ready for rain plans B or even C if we couldn’t have the wedding outside. It turned out that we didn’t need to worry at all, because the weather absolutely smiled on this couple. In fact, it was the most lovely day that I’ve seen in Vail, Colorado this year. There was just enough cloud cover to keep us all pleasantly cool and provide the perfect backdrop for amazing photos. Thank you Callie Hobbs for these incredible photos!

Flute Wedding Ceremony Music - Q&A

Solo flute wedding ceremony music, photo by rebecca marie photography

Solo flute wedding ceremony music, photo by rebecca marie photography

My romantic and versatile flute music is a stunning addition to any wedding ceremony. If you don’t know a lot about flute, it may be hard to imagine how live flute music will look and feel on your wedding day. Now it’s time to to meet this hidden gem as I answer the top flute questions that wedding couples ask me.

Is solo flute a good instrument for weddings?
Absolutely! I play the some of the best known music and most beautiful wedding classics on solo flute for weddings every year. Because it’s a more specialized instrument, your guests will also appreciate your discerning musical taste in choosing a flute player! Unlike other instruments that are made from wood, brass, or other materials, my flute is made from solid rose gold and silver, giving it a visually stunning effect and a luxurious, sweet and smooth tone.

Will the flute be loud enough for my outdoor wedding?
Many people think of the flute as a soft sounding instrument, so it may surprise you to know that a flute can sound even louder than a violin. In addition to that, I’ve played for so many outdoor weddings, I’ve trained myself to be able to play even louder than the average flute player, while maintaining an elegant sound. Most importantly, I know how to adjust the volume of my flute playing to perfectly suit any setting, from wide open outdoor mountain settings to intimate indoor spaces. If further amplification is needed, I will use my professional Bose L1 speaker or battery powered system coupled with a clip-on mic designed specifically for flute.

Is the flute a romantic instrument?
The opulent sounds of my solid rose gold and silver flute plus my personal musical touch are wonderfully romantic. I love seeing the looks of blissful transport on people’s faces when they hear me play my flute for the first time. I bring my own passion to my music and I’ve even pleasantly surprised the most skeptical of clients. One of my recent clients was dreaming of having solo violin or harp at her wedding, because she didn’t think that solo flute would be romantic. When her wedding day was forecast to be too cold for strings, she hired me to play flute. When she heard me play, she was surprised and amazed, and she write me a lovely review:

“Christen displayed the utmost professionalism and played such incredibly romantic, beautiful songs on her flute in 15 degree weather! She set the mood for the best day of my life! Her music truly made my ceremony. She has such a vast playlist, she can truly bring your wedding vision to life!”

What kinds of songs can you play on the flute?
The flute is among the earliest known musical instruments, and today it’s one of the most modernized instruments, on the cutting edge of avant-garde techniques. Because of this, the flute is one of the most versatile instruments today. Flute sounds perfectly at home playing everything from traditional classical music to current rock, pop, and jazz. I love taking special song requests, and if you can dream it, I can probably play it! My flute music will soar gracefully or dance joyfully to fit the mood of your marriage celebration.

Because flutists breathe exactly the same way that vocalists breathe, the flute creates a wonderful instrumental version of vocal songs, including romantic love songs and pop songs. When paired with other instruments, the flute can play the vocal parts and the background parts can be filled out with guitar, harp, piano or strings.

What are the outdoor playing requirements for solo flute?
When I play solo flute, I’m much more flexible with outdoor weather conditions than most other instruments. Unlike delicate stringed instruments, I don’t need shade or the shelter of a tent when I play. My flute and I can also tolerate cold weather quite well, and I can even play in some rain. When I play solo flute for your wedding ceremony, you can still have the outdoor wedding music of your dreams even if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

What’s a flute quartet?
There are actually two types of flute quartets! One type is four flutes, and the other type, which is the one that I offer, is a flute, violin, viola cello. I sometimes call this a flute and strings quartet to eliminate confusion. The traditional string quartet consists of 2 violins, a viola, and a cello. A flute quartet replaces one of the violins with a flute, and it can play everything that a string quartet can play. The sounds of the flute and strings beautifully compliment and enhance each other. The four different instruments of the flute quartet gives it a fuller and more varied sound than a traditional string quartet.

The Boulder Symphony Flute and Strings Quartet Plays at the North Boulder Lucky's Market

April2019.jpg

This past weekend, I enjoyed playing flute with the Boulder Symphony flute and strings quartet. We played at Lucky's Market for their Earth Day Volunteer Fair. I put together a set list of lively classical music and we had so many people tell us that we had totally made their day. I saw at least six different people dancing right in the middle of the grocery store. One lady said that she spent a very long time "looking at soaps" because she wanted to stay as long as possible to hear us play.

I enjoy playing my flute and cello with the Boulder Symphony, and I invite you to check out our concerts on the Boulder Symphony website.

It was a beautiful and crisp day in late summer, when my flute quartet (flute, violin, viola, cello) headed up to a very special location in Estes Park, Colorado. We had the privilege of playing for a wedding ceremony at Camp Timberline, a camp owned by the family. The camp was located in an isolated Colorado location and it featured panoramic mountain views with nothing around for miles.

In addition to playing flute at this wedding, the bride gave me the special opportunity to arrange a number new songs in various musical styles. I rehearsed with my quartet a week before the wedding so that we'd play the new songs seamlessly on the day of the ceremony. Some of the songs that were written for solo voice and guitar were challenging to translate to a quartet setting, but with a little creative thinking and a lot of  experimenting, I was really pleased with the end results, and enjoyed the process. This Georgia bride's song requests ranged from Thunderstruck by ACDC, to hymns and contemporary Christian music, to country, pop, and rock songs.

The processional was a mix of contemporary Christian songs played and sung by a few friends of the family, and then we played "Sheep May Safely Graze" by Bach for the moms, and transitioned to Thunderstuck by ACDC for the groomsmen's entrance.

Afterwards, we performed a custom playlist that the bride had selected as the guests enjoyed cocktails out on the lawn.

Flute Quartet Music for Annual Inspire at NCAR in Boulder, Colorado

IMG_20180807_184859.jpg

I led the Boulder Symphony flute quartet (flute, violin, viola, cello) in playing for the Annual Inspire event in Boulder, Colorado once again this year. The event was held at NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research). The patio overlooks an incredible view of the Colorado front range, but in August, the view was partially obscured by smoke and haze from the wildfires that are burning in the west. We were grateful that towards the end of the event, a cool evening breeze came, bringing with it clear air and the scent of pine. It's an incredibly beautiful location, and I never tire of each amazing Colorado vista that we have the privilege of playing at.

Our quartet played a selection of cheerful classical music before and after the speeches were made. As usual, the speeches from the students were personal and inspiring stories of hope and how they overcame difficult obstacles in order to achieve their dreams. It was an uplifting evening.

A bride celebrates when the Vail Wedding Deck gondola reopens after a thunderstorm

In early July, my flute quartet (flute, violin, viola, cello) headed to the Colorado mountains to play for a wedding ceremony on the Vail Wedding Deck. When we arrived, the weather was unusually hot and dusty and unlike the cool crisp air that we usually expect from Vail. The sun was shining brightly and all was calm as we took the gondola up to the top of Vail Mountain. The moment we arrived, it was announced that a large storm was moving in, and the gondola would be closed!

Over 400 people were trapped at the top of the mountain, including two brides. One bride had just been married and the second bride was supposed to be married at the bottom of the gondola in Vail Village. The storm rolled in, bringing with it lightning strikes and heavy rain. Our wedding party and guests were waiting at the bottom of the gondola and we were waiting at the top, and we were all hoping that our couple could have their dream outdoor wedding on top of the mountain. It must have been about an hour, but finally the announcement came through that the storm had passed and the gondola would be running again. The crowd of people erupted into big cheers, and the cheering brides were escorted onto the gondola first.

Our wedding party made it to the top of the mountain for their dream wedding after all. The rain had washed away the hot and dusty feeling, and it was fresh and cool. Just as the bride and groom said "I do", the sun came out and shone on them as if for a blessing.

My quartet played elegant classical music as the guests arrived for the ceremony, and we continued to play after the ceremony to accompany the wedding party as they had their pictures taken.

Selections from prelude and postlude music:
Rondeau (Mouret), Ave Maria (Schubert), selections from Handel's Water Music, To a Wild Rose (MacDowell), selections from Bach string quartets

Flute Quartet Wedding Ceremony Music at the Donovan Pavilion in Vail, Colorado

Flute quartet wedding ceremony music at the Donovan Pavilion in Vail, Colorado

At the beginning of autumn, my flute quartet (flute, violin, viola, cello) headed down to Vail, Colorado to play music for a wedding ceremony at the Donovan Pavilion. The drive up to Vail was the most beautiful drive of the whole year. The first snow had just fallen the night before and the aspens were in peak season with their golden yellow leaves. When the sun shone, the aspens glowed, gradually making way to dark pines dusted with fresh snow at the tops of the mountains. Behind the mountain peeks, storm clouds made a dramatic and imposing backdrop. The rain and wind from a large cold front was quickly moving in, and when it was time for our quartet to start playing prelude music, it was sprinkling rain and the wind blew in from the west, bringing in clouds and cold temperatures. We couldn't play the wedding music outside because of the weather so, with the help of my high quality sound system, we were able to play indoors and still be heard clearly outside. We played a mix of contemporary music and hymns for the prelude and then played a traditional processional.

The wedding ceremony was so elegant and the wedding party braved the cold weather so that the couple could have their dream of an outdoor ceremony. The flowers and decor were romantic and glamorous with old-fashioned deep pink roses, greenery, and candles everywhere. The tables were covered in rich blue cloths accented by branches covered in deep gold. The color contrasts and textures were vibrant and luxurious.

On a Saturday in mid-December, my flute quartet (flute, violin, viola, cello) left Denver and headed up to Beaver Creek, Colorado to play for a holiday wedding ceremony. A blizzard was forecast to hit the Colorado mountains that evening and we left very early and were prepared to face the worst. When we left Denver it was sunny and in the 50's but the weather quickly became worse as we drove further into the mountains. We drove for five hours over dark and icy roads thought the blizzard. Accidents and stranded vehicles were everywhere but I drove carefully and we enjoyed each other's company inside our cozy car.

We arrived safely at the Chapel at Beaver Creek and it was such a welcoming sight after our long drive. Colored lights and greenery were everywhere and the sanctuary was bright, warm and charmingly decorated for the season. As we waited to play, we enjoyed listening to prelude music played by Michael Lancaster on the bagpipes. To conclude the prelude, our quartet played "All I Want is You" by U2.

Flute Quartet Wedding Ceremony Music at Ten Mile Station

Kerzner01.jpg

Our flute quartet recently played at Ten Mile Station, a mountainside wedding venue in Breckenridge, Colorado. As the guests arrived on buses from the bottom of the mountain, we entertained them with an upbeat selection of classical music. The beautiful bride walked down the aisle accompanied by "The Wedding Song" by Peter, Paul, and Mary. This was a special request by the mother of the bride, and was the same song that she walked down the aisle to when she married. After the wedding, we moved inside where we played popular, rock, and jazz music for another half hour during cocktails.

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach), Sheep May Safely Graze (Bach), Trumpet Tune (Clarke), Trumpet Voluntary (Purcell), Simple Gifts (Traditional), Handel's Water Music, Ave Maria (Schubert)

Announcing New Flute Quartet Wedding Ceremony Music Samples

Kern03.jpg

Our flute quartet recently recorded a number of new music samples. You can listen to the the music samples online here: Flute Quartet Music Samples. Our flute quartet consists of a flute, violin, viola, and cello and the tone of the flute wonderfully compliments the sound of the strings to create a full and rich sound. I am very excited about these recordings because after a lot of time and work, I have now completed making recordings of all ten of my music ensembles! Photo courtesy of Kern Photo
