About Me

Christen Stephens has over ten years of experience as a private music instructor and performer. As a musician, Christen has played for weddings, corporate events, social events, theatre, choir, and weekly church services. She has also played with various groups including the Charlotte Flute Choir, the Union Symphony Orchestra, the UNCC Flute Choir, and the UNCC Flute Quartet. In addition to being classically trained, she can also play and improvise jazz, and play Celtic and fiddle style music on the flute. She currently performs as a soloist and chamber musician in the Charlotte area. She also plays regularly at her home church where she improvises off of chord charts on flute and piano.

Christen is also an instructor in flute, piano, cello, and recorder. She teaches students of all ages and levels out of her home studio which is located near Charlotte, NC. Christen has a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she graduated magna cum laude and earned her K-12 teaching license. There she studied under Mark Thomas, an international soloist and founder of the National Flute Association. She also studied flute under JoAnne Evans, Irene Maddox, Jennifer Dior, and Valerie Simosko. She studied piano under several different teachers, and learned piano pedagogy under Anna Brock. She is currently studying cello under Christina Beekman. In addition to private teaching, Christen has experience in teaching keyboarding and recorder classes, and guiding flute sectionals in Charlotte area schools. She is a member of the National Flute Association, the Charlotte Piano Teachers Forum, and the Charlotte Music Club.
